Caring for a Fine Walnut Stock

Oil, patience, and the discipline to leave it alone.

A hand-rubbed oil finish is not a coat of armor — it's a living surface, and it wants a little attention and a great deal of restraint.

After a wet day, wipe the wood dry and let it come to room temperature slowly, away from the truck heater. Water is patient; so should you be.

Twice a season, put the smallest drop of stock oil you can manage onto your palm, warm it, and rub it into the wood in long strokes until your hand comes away dry. That's it. More oil is not more protection; it's a gummy mess your grandchildren will curse.

Handle the gun. Oil from clean hands, the friction of a proper mount, the slow patina of decades — that's what turns a nice stock into an heirloom.
